Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder
The Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder is at the top of the line of Leupold rangefinders. It is functionally equivalent to the Leupold GX-2, with advanced features such as slope compensation, Prism Lock and True Golf Range. In terms of sporting a sturdier, solid aluminium frame, having a red OLED display that is so easy to read against dark backgrounds and sexy looking, Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder is every bit the equivalent of the Leupold GX-3.
The Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder has an aluminium housing that is built to last and a very visually appealing body. It maintains the same high optical standard of Leupold rangefinders in its rugged structure. Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder has precision glass, cutting-edge coating and provides a low glare, scratch resistant optic set for accurate ranging.
The Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder offers very fast distance acquisition and finds many distances from one target to another through a range scan. Its red OLED display is very easy to read against a darker background. The replacement of the Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder battery is done every few months, on the assumption of golf play on a very regular basis. Weekend golf plays may mean an annual battery replacement.
The Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder provides functionality and accuracy that are nearing perfection for a rangefinder. It is one of the easiest rangefinders to use. However, some golfers consider the Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder a bit too small and prefer a larger rangefinder with more magnification. Another area of disappointment with the rangefinder is its 1-year warranty. Golfers feel at least a 2-year warranty is more appropriate given the quality and reputation of Leupold rangefinders.
Specifications of Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder
The Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder is a 4.1” x 2.9” x 1.3” in dimension and 7.9 ounces in weight. Its range is 800 yards to the reflective prism and 450 yards to the pin. It sports an OLED display and has a 6x magnification.Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder is weatherproof and uses a CR-2 lithium battery. The Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder package comes with a standard chrome faceplate and a Smart Key faceplate, a battery with a life span equivalent to 10,000 actuations and a 1-year warranty.
The lightweight Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder is easier to work with, as it can be handled with one hand and carried in a pocket or in the side of a bag. Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder does not take up an entire pocket of a golf bag like larger rangefinders do.
The Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder has an 800-yard target range with the ability for a reflective prism catch up to the same yardage as well. Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder allows shooting to any pin distance within 450 yards, far enough for any golf course hole. The Pinhunter mode of the Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder offers an easy pin grab. It provides accurate distances within +/- a yard.
Since there are very few golf course shots that hit over 300 yard distances, a rangefinder that grabs over 300 yards proves unnecessary. In reality, what is needed is a rangefinder that acquires an accurate yardage from below and up to 300 yards which the Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder easily provides.
Magnification of Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder
The 6x magnification of the Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder is large enough for almost all golf course shots, despite the fact that some competing rangefinders offer a higher 7x magnification. It is important to note that a steadier hand is required for rangefinders offering a higher magnification. If keeping a perfectly steady rangefinder proves to be a difficulty, having a rangefinder with over a 6x magnification must not be a concern. The Leupold GX-4 allows both PinHunter and Prism Lock features to be in active mode for distances.
Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder Pinhunter mode
The Pinhunter mode of the Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder allows laser beam firing directly at the pin through the crosshairs. It also allows grabbing of an accurate distance as the laser bounces off the pin and returns the yardage. This mode enables avoidance of background items when getting an accurate pin yardage.
Prism Lock Mode of Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder
The Prism Lock mode of the Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder easily grabs reflective prisms when playing on a golf course with pin prism targets. Area scanning where the pin is, can be accomplished with the simple holding down of the top button of the rangefinder. An accurate yardage is returned, with a beep notification, once the rangefinder attains a prism lock-in. The OLED display will even freeze at this point for a perfect yardage indication.
Smart Key faceplate
The Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder is lightweight and compact, with vertically-oriented optics allowing the device to be used with just one hand. It can operate as a rangefinder providing only line-of-site distance measurements. The conversion of the rangefinder into a slope-compensating rangefinder, providing True Golf Range and Club Selection, features exclusive to Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder, can be accomplished with the switching of its chrome faceplate with a yellow faceplate, acting as a Smart Key.
Leupold took a gamble with this design of the Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder. Unfortunately, this design gamble did not pay off. The United States Golf Association a.k.a. USGA, ruled the Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder as an illegal rangefinder for tournament play regardless of whether it is used in standard line-of-sight mode, with the use of the chrome faceplate or slope-compensating mode, with the use of the yellow, Smart Key faceplate.Try Leupold GX-4 Rangefinder now!
